In 2017, Chateau Impney Hill Climb will be awarding, jointly with the Bugatti Owners’ Club, “The ERA Challenge Trophy” to the best ERA or ERA-engine car performance overall at both La Vie en Bleu, held at Prescott Hill Climb on 27/28 May 2017, and the Chateau Impney Hill Climb on 8/9 July 2017. We are delighted to already be welcoming ERAs R4D, R4A, R7B, R8C and AJM1 to both events with several more lined up to attend this summer.
In 2015, at the inaugural Chateau Impney Hill Climb, half the world's remaining ERA single-seater racing cars competed. It was a great coup for the Hill Climb to have attracted so many to its first event.
English Racing Automobiles (ERA), a small racing car manufacturer based in Bourne, Lincolnshire, was established in 1933 by Humphrey Cook, Raymond Mays, and Peter Berthon. Despite the tremendous competition from European manufacturers, such as, Bugatti, Alfa Romeo and the state backed Auto Unions and Mercedes, ERA were incredibly successful and flew the flag for British racing in the 1930s, winning Grand Prix as far afield as South Africa. Revered by racing fans around the world, in its heyday the ERA was raced by everyone including aristocracy and royalty, such as Earl Howe and Prince Bira of Siam.
“ERAs have played a massive role in the Chateau Impney Hill Climb events being some of the fastest and most spectacular cars to compete here. We are delighted to be working with the Bugatti Owners Club to celebrate these wonderfully historic racing cars” said Rod Spollon, event director of the Chateau Impney Hill Climb.
