“For me, it was very much victory snatched from the jaws of defeat.”
This was the second year Dr David Pryke competed at the hill climb and, after his class win in 2015, was determined to reclaim his title and stay at the top. He set a new class record, with a 47.70 in the Morgan Riley for the Pre-1940 Special Sports Car and All Supercharged Sports Cars up to 1500cc Class.
“On my second practice run, the engine blew its cylinder head gasket so I limped up the hill. I found a rather tired (but just about serviceable) second-hand gasket at home that evening, so came back to the Chateau at first light just after 5am on Sunday to change the gasket. Just got it done in time for my run and then went out and broke the class record by half a second!”
It was an impressive win, storming ahead of the rest of the class by over three seconds!
“I had a wonderful time all weekend and love the way that all the drivers attack the hill – really going for it, despite the fact that many of the cars are historic and, in some cases, priceless. Can't wait for next year!”
The Chateau Impney Hill Climb 2018 will be held on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 July.
