The Hagley and District Light Car Club organised its first sprint in the grounds of the hotel on 29 September 1957. Welcoming all the leading hill climb competitors of the day, the Chateau was hailed by Autocar magazine as “easily the most picturesque of this country’s sprint and hill climb venues.” Chateau Impney’s original speed events epitomised the golden era of motorsport, when amateur and professional drivers competed alongside one another in the fastest cars of the day and across every discipline of motorsport.
Now, almost 60 years since motorsport first came to the Chateau, the team at Chateau Impney are relaunching the high-octane Hill Climb, celebrating this momentous part of the Chateau’s history and proudly putting it back on the agenda for the future.
The Chateau Impney Hill Climb follows on from the success of a gala that was held at Chateau Impney in December 2013 to celebrate the original speed trials and gauge the level of public interest in their resurrection. The one-day festival attracted 1,500 people and received a great deal of media attention, with coverage on BBC Midlands Today, ITV Central and BBC Hereford and Worcestershire, as well as in many local newspapers and trade publications.
Having whetted the appetite for the competition’s return, it was full steam ahead for the 2015 event. The new, MSA-approved course is double the length and more challenging than the original track, yet still rooted within the stunning grounds of Chateau Impney – a unique and historic venue.
